What Can Affect Male Fertility?
Male fertility concerns may relate to:
A single semen value does not by itself prove that a man is fertile or infertile. Semen parameters vary, which is why abnormal findings often need clinical interpretation and sometimes repeat testing.

How Is Male Fertility Evaluated?
Male fertility evaluation should connect the semen report with the full clinical picture. The doctor may review whether the finding is mild, moderate or severe, whether repeat testing is needed and whether a specialist male reproductive assessment is appropriate.
Because sperm production can be affected by hormones, medicines, infections, surgery and general health, the evaluation should not stop at a single number on a report.

Reproductive & Medical History
The doctor may review previous pregnancies, duration of trying, sexual function, past operations or infections, medicines, lifestyle exposures and relevant medical conditions.

Semen Analysis
Semen analysis is a key first-line test. It provides information about sperm concentration, movement and morphology along with other semen characteristics.

Further Testing When Indicated
If semen findings are significantly abnormal or history suggests another problem, evaluation by a male reproductive specialist may include examination, hormone tests, genetic testing or imaging when clinically appropriate.

Couple-Based Treatment Planning
Male findings should be interpreted alongside the female partner's age, ovarian reserve, tubal health and treatment history before deciding between timed care, IUI, IVF, ICSI or further evaluation. Men who are trying to conceive should tell their doctor about testosterone therapy or anabolic steroids because external testosterone can suppress sperm production.
